Questions And Answers: Page 6
Q:
Is it safe to use stud guns for piercing?
A: Absolutely not. Only sterile disposable equipment is suitable for safe body
piercing. The lack of ability to sterilize the ear piercing guns is the main issue
of concern about such equipment. Blood can aerosolize (become airborne in
essentially microscopic particles) and contaminate the gun. Therefore, it is
possible to transmit a disease causing micro organism. The hepatitis virus
can live for extended periods on inanimate surfaces and transmission of such
disease through this type of equipment is possible. Also, most ear studs are
quite blunt and dull. Piercing with a stud gun is accomplished by using a
considerable amount of force. This is more like a crush injury (and feels like
one) than a piercing. The use of a sharper, sterile object makes for a much
safer, gentler, more comfortable piercing. Proper use of sterile, disposable
equipment and sterile jewelry in a hygienic environment is the best way to
prevent disease transmission during a piercing procedure. Another problem is
that stud guns are very easy to misuse. Some who operate them have very
little or no training at all. Further, many people do not stop at piercing only ear
lobes, using stud guns, and also pierce eyebrows, tongues, nostrils and
navels. Manufacturers strongly warn against using stud guns for those
purposes, but that does not prevent frequent abuse of stud guns throughout
America. This is absolutely inappropriate and very dangerous.
