Q:
Do tongue piercings require special care?
A: Yes. It is vital to the health of your oral piercing that cleanliness be maintained
at all times. You can allow small pieces of ice to dissolve in your mouth to help
limit the initial swelling. Be certain to brush your teeth (soft bristle brush)
and rinse your mouth after each time you eat or drink anything besides water.
It is important to use a mouthwash that does not contain alcohol as it can
irritate the area and delay healing. During healing it is important to floss and
gently brush teeth, tongue and jewelry. Once healed, brush your jewelry more
thoroughly to avoid plaque build up. DO NOT play with your jewelry and avoid
talking excessively during the healing phase. These two things can cause
unsightly and uncomfortable scar tissue, migration and other complications.
Avoid oral sexual contact, (including French kissing), gum, tobacco and
chewing your fingernails. Do not share cups, plates or eating utensils.
All of these things can increase your risk of problems and mayl delay the
healing cycle. For your comfort avoid spicy, salty, acidic or hot food and
beverages for a few days after piercing. Once the swelling has subsided,
it is vital to replace the original longer jewelry with a shorter post.
Be certain to periodically check and tighten the balls on your jewelry. |
