Common Questions And
Answers: Page 4
Q:
What type of jewelry should be used for an initial piercing?
A:
This is a great question because most individuals do not understand that an
initial piercing should not be performed with just any jewelry. Not all jewelry is
created equal. For an initial piercing only “implant grade” surgical steel should
be used. The term “implant grade” is regulated by the American Society for
Testing and Materials. Only 316 L or 316 LVM steel that meets ASTM standard
F-138-03 can be called implant grade, as can only pure Titanium (not coated) 6
AL4V ELI (ASTM standard F-136-02). Don’t be fooled. Some other piercing
facilities do not use implant grade jewelry for an initial piercing. If you don’t
know….ASK! At Artistic Skin Designs, Inc. we feel that your health and safety is
imperative therefore we use only the best 316LVM and Titanium available for all
initial piercings. We also go a step further by using only internally threaded
jewelry for all initial piercings (meaning the threads are on the balls, not the
shaft). Externally threaded jewelry (thread on the shaft), in our opinion, is not
safe for any initial piercing. The threads on externally threaded jewelry can
cause trauma when inserted through an unhealed piercing by scratching or
scraping the walls of the piercing site. We at Artistic Skin Designs, Inc. feel your
health and safety, and the integrity of the piercing industry is critical for success.
Therefore be assured that unlike some others we use only the best jewelry
available for all initial piercings. Because our jewelry and sterilization meet the
highest piercing standards, the cost of your new piercing may be slightly more
than at some other shops, but your health and safety are worth it.
