Answers: Page 3
Q: Can a piercing become infected?
A: If a piercing swells (i.e. days, weeks, or months later), it may be infected.
An infected piercing will often get very swollen and sore, and may have yellow,
green or bloody discharge or no discharge at all. The whole area may be shiny,
itch or have an unpleasant odor. If this happens, sea salt soaks are recommended
four times daily, after several soaks you are likely to get fluid out of the
piercing. Salt water soaks several times a day will usually clear up a minor
infection within a couple of days. The main cause of infection happens by
touching or playing with the jewelry using dirty hands. Additional causes of
infection can stem from any oral/bodily fluid contact with the new piercing,
cosmetics in/on/around the piercing, hair products or dirty hair touching the
site, and smoking. Try to eliminate these during healing and you should have no
problems and be able to enjoy your piercing for years to come.
