Common Questions And
Answers: Page 2
Q: What can I expect afterwards?
A: It is not uncommon to have slight amounts of bleeding, discoloration and/or
swelling. Some tenderness or discomfort in the area of the piercing may also
occur. None of these things are indications of complications in a new piercing.
You may secrete a whitish/yellow fluid which crusts on the skin and jewelry. This is
not infection or pus, and is a normal indication of a healing piercing. Do not play
with or touch jewelry at any time other than cleaning and these things shall go
away fairly quickly. In order to avoid an extended period of any bleeding from the
piercing, reduce your intake of aspirin, alcohol and any caffeine. Taking Ibuprofen
(Advil, Motrin etc.) will help alleviate and minimize swelling. For any piercing,
above the neck, it may also help to use an additional pillow to prop up your head
while sleeping. You may also feel stinging, burning or aching for hours or days
afteran initial piercing. During the healing process your piercing may tighten or itch,
both are normal signs of healing. In most piercings, do not expect your jewelry to
swing freely, even after they are healed.
